Too Many Thoughts, So Little Time

Sometimes I would like to have as many thoughts as there are trees in this picture. Just one, thanks.

My own dichotomies exhaust me. Just the other day, I was having a blogging brain fart. Now, I have so many things that I want to do, I just can’t seem to focus on one.

Sometimes I want to run away to and be a Buddhist Monk, and just sit in peaceful zen gardens, focusing on the tone of a bell and working on reaching enlightenment. And then I remember that I haven’t had the patience to try meditating, even once in my life. I get bored super easily and thrive off of change, dichotomies, and extremes. I need new, constant inspiration. I don’t mind this aspect of my personality, but it does lend itself to being restless and having thought overload more often than not.

I have so many things that I want to do right now. I have so many things that I need to do right now. So many passions and excitements that I bounce from one project to the next, like an ADHD three year old.

When I was watching Dope, Hope, and Soap the other day, something that Derrick said struck me the most. He spoke of giving 110% effort in order to get optimum results. I quickly realized that I have seven things that I want to put 110% effort into. Now, if I were capable of putting 110% effort into anything, and I have 7 things that I am passionate about, this means I would only be able to devote 15.714286% effort to each of these things. Which would mean very slow progress on all of the things I want to achieve, and no remarkable progress on any one thing. My solution? PRIORITIZE.

I decided to sit down and pick three aspects of my life to focus my efforts.
In about 30 minutes, I was able to simplify the million things that I felt like I had to do, needed to do, and should do. Once I got everything down on paper, I felt relieved. I love lists, and in this case, the list did exactly it’s job: simplified, organized, and prioritized all of the randomness that enjoys swimming around in my head without my consent.

Here was my system for prioritizing when you feel like life is pulling you in a hundred directions, all at once:

1. Pick your top three areas of your life that are most important right now.

What areas are nagging at you? What areas are causing you the most stress, and worry? What is most important to you? I picked: Financial, Health, and Happiness. I picked a combination of things that I would rather not deal with (Financial) and something vague, yet of the utmost important to my sanity (Happiness).

2. Write down one or two goals beneath each topic which accomplishing would make you feel successful.

Don’t think too big… just pick something that would make you feel accomplished, and is attainable in about a month time period.

3. Next, write down around five smaller steps that would get you closer to the goals you just listed.

Write down manageable steps that would get you further along in accomplishing the bigger goals, and things that you can do every day, or a few times a week. Make them things that seem easy. Break it down.

4. Finally, brainstorm. Under each larger topic, answer the question WHY?

Why is this a priority? Why is this something that needs more focus? What about this aspect of your life is stressing you out? How would you feel relieved if you were more successful in this area? Don’t be overly logical, or perfect. Just brainstorm everything that comes to mind: practical, emotional, and every other reason that you want this to be a priority.

I felt so relieved when I did this, that I wanted to share it here. Now, in order to make this S.M.A.R.T… let’s give ourselves a time frame. Do you think you could make significant progress in these areas before October 1st? I liked this idea of a little over a month time frame. Not too long, and not too short.

Did this system help anyone else, other than me, tame all of those things that you feel like you need to do?

We are apparently completely on the same wave length, as I have been going through the exact same process! A post I had earlier this week about managing multiple projects covered very similar ideas, and my struggle to prioritize all of the different things I want to be doing! Very good post, and very good advice here. Now hopefully you are better at sticking to the things you have made a priority, than your goal of getting up early every day for a week!

Also check this out if you want to see what meditating can really be like!

Thanks, Sean!

I think your post was one of the things that inspired me to create a system to prioritize. But, it seems pretty common among us bloggers who are trying to excel with writing, while managing every other aspect of our lives!

Thanks for the meditation link… it’s something that I have been wanting to check out.

Hey Karen,

I totally am in the same status right now: working(learning) at two firms, studying, trying to get my blog rolling, teaching myself of web-development, sailing, etc. Nonetheless, I find myself bouncing from here to there without any accomplishments, but mere disappointments to myself.

Your writing helped me think of prioritizing again in four steps and really liked the idea of setting up a time line of about a month –30 day trial, which I learned from StevePavlina and trying to adapt.

Thanks for great post, and now I gotta write down those two BIG things I will accomplish by October 1st. Finally, the most significant step should be taken: Get Started — let’s go!

Hey Bryan,
(I just realized I didn’t know your name until now! That’s my brother’s name actually, spelled differently, so I won’t forget it.)

Like I said to Sean above, it seems like a lot of us starting new blogs, while having other lives are having this problem. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one!!

I like the idea of a 30 day trial too… seems like just the right amount of time.

There must be something in the twitter air….I just posted about some of these same tactics for getting a move on things. It seems almost natural to people to try and focus on too many things at once. You have some great points here! This same system can be applied to moving toward living out your dreams, one of the first steps I took in designing life. My favorite is writing down 2-3 vital things. I do this every morning, asking…if I could only do two things today or the world would stop, what would they be? Then I schedule to do that…that day! (using iCal with alarms!) Here’s two more lines for thought.

Think like a computer. If you open too many applications, you’re eventually going to crash.

Stanford Study just came out exemplifying how multi-taskers actually accomplish less! http://news.stanford.edu/news/2009/august24/multitask-research-study-082409.html

Great post, keep on keeping on!

Thanks Robert! :)

I have heard of similar studies like the one you linked to…. and I totally agree. I tend to like multi tasking, just because I get bored easily. But, when the multi tasking gets outta control it does exactly the opposite, and become unproductive.

I like you idea of writing down just a couple things a day to accomplish… I like that idea, and might have to try it myself!

Excellent post! You’ve really made me think about how I need to focus on the truly important things. I have so many ideas and so many thoughts swimming around in my mind that it’s hard for me to focus on the things that are really the most important to me. You’ve helped me to assess what’s important and I love the little plan you’ve created here. It’s great!

Thanks Dani! I just randomly came up with the little plan, but it ended up really working on simplifying my thoughts. Glad you found it useful! :)

Great points. I agree with Sean too.

Focus is tough, but if you truly want something in this world at any time or moment, focus will help you attain it

Karen,

This is a very timely post to me.
When you’re full of ideas and hobbies, it becomes difficult to be great at one thing and end up being mediocre at a lot of things. Implementing your steps will kick my butt in the right direction!

Hey Karen! :-)

Funny things going on with my internet explorer today…the text on your blog was coming out really big! Lol :)

Great post, something i really struggle with too, I love that I get inspired so easily but as you say it can be unproductive. I realised this week I need to ‘box’ myself in to achieve certain things each day to keep off the tangents! I know what i want to do, I just let myself wander in that area. I will write a list this weekend :)

Thanks Karen

Your post spoke to me loud and clear. I am in transition right now, and trying to relaunch my blog (and doing some customizing), and trying to stay in touch with my friends, and trying to revise my resume, and get organized, and… you get the idea.

I know my buddy who is still working would be jealous of the time that I have. Unfortunately in the jungle of thoughts, I’m not too productive.

I sense that a lot of people feel this way…we all want it all. We want more out of life, more meaning, etc. I will have to make note of your post and whittle away on just a couple things rather that swimming in all of the ideas. Thanks for the post.

Heya Karen!

Haha, funny post, the beginning made me LOL! :)

I’m also learning about zen and Zen masters, but it takes these guys 20 years or more to become enlightened. One day maybe, but I don’t have the patience for that right now.

I would love to go and live in a village in the moutains for a few months and just train martial arts, that would be awesome :)

Great that you are prioritising, I have that with my online projects, where I was doing 10 things at once. THat was crazy, so Ive decided to scale down to three, my blog and two other sites Im working on:)

Have an awesome weekend! :)

Thank you so much, I was actually recently in this overwhelm-type situation and this is very helpful! :)
